It's probate season now in the HBCU culture. Here at SC State, we are connected with our Greek members on campus and I spoke with a member of the Alpha Lambda Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi in Jordon Moorer about the importance of a probate and what it really means.
How would you explain the importance of a probate to someone with no greek knowledge? A probate is place where you show everybody what you learned while join a fraternity or sorority and tell everyone what you what to achieve. Different organizations have different goals for example Kappa Alpha Psi is about achievement in every field of human endeavor. Those guidelines will follow you throughout life.
What type of challenges do Greek organizations have trying to put together a probate? A probate is actually a lot. You have to find attire and venue for the people coming out. You have to have someone selling tickets and collecting at the door. It's a lot of things you have to have. I won't say it's too much but it does take a lot of work.
What is the difference between a good probate and a great probate? I would base a probate off of the people coming out and showing that you're having fun because you want to cherish those memories. You're going to go back and look and be like "dang that was me".
Looking back a year later, what do you cherish the most about your probate? I would say the first time strolling because at first I could not stroll at all. Now I look back and see the progress I've made since the beginning. I also like to go down memory lane with my brothers.
Did the tragic death of Caleb Wilson impact you or your organization directly? It did impact a lot of people. Some were scared and didn't know what would come with joining a fraternity. Rumors about hazing impacted and even indirectly. Family members not wanting them to continue and it impacted the chapters too. Now it's harder to get insurance after that happened, it's already hard to get insurance for Fraternities and Sororities and it's even harder now after that happened.
